Hundreds of Surfers Gearing up for 100 Wave Challenge

Wave of Excitement Building for Seventh Annual Surf-a-Thon in Mission Beach to Benefit Fatherless Teens

San Diego, Calif. – Hundreds of surfers will be waxing up their boards and hitting Mission Beach on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016 for the seventh annual Boys to Men 100 Wave Challenge.

The goal of the 100 Wave Challenge is for each surfer to attempt to catch 100 waves in one day and raise at least $1,000. There will be sections in the water for long boards, short boards, stand-up paddle boards, boogie boards and body surfers. Legendary surfer and motivational speaker Shaun Tomson, as well as World Championship Tour surfer Damien Hobgood, and legendary surfer and surfboard shaper Duke Aipa, will be participating in the event again this year.

The popular surf-a-thon is the main funding source for Boys to Men Mentoring (BTM), a San Diego-based non-profit organization that helps pave a positive path for fatherless teenage boys.  The 100 Wave Challenge accounts for 68% of BTM’s annual budget, which has doubled since the first event and is now in its seventh year. The event raised $353,000 in 2015. This year’s fundraising goal is $400,000.  The organization plans to sign up 300 surfers for this year’s event, compared to 168 in 2015. The 100 Wave Challenge also includes a Surf Angel program that allows non-surfers to participate by helping one of the boys from BTM raise funds to surf in the event.

Dr. Bronner’s, family-owned maker of the top-selling natural brand of soap in North America, will be celebrating its fifth year this year as title sponsor for the 100 Wave Challenge. The Vista, Calif.-based company has a long history of supporting organizations that help strengthen communities and support positive development projects.

“Our company strives to be an engine for positive social change, and Boys to Men is a great partner in that mission. Dr. Bronner’s is proud to support this amazing community initiative,” said David Bronner, Cosmic Engagement Officer of Dr. Bronner’s. “Not only is surfing for a good cause a ton of fun, but because of the success of the 100 Wave Challenge, hundreds of at-risk boys around San Diego now have good, positive role models in their lives.”

BTM is currently partnered with 22 middle and high schools conducting 31 weekly meetings; 30 weekly in-school groups, one after-school group, and three open community groups throughout San Diego County. There are currently 27 schools throughout San Diego County waiting to implement the Boys to Men program, but the organization needs funding.

“We are so grateful for the years of continued support from our friends at Dr. Bronner’s in helping fatherless teenage boys become the good men they want to be,” said BTM’s co-Founder and Executive Director Craig McClain. “Our Boys to Men Mentoring outreach continues to grow significantly with the passionate support from Dr. Bronner's, as well as from all of our sponsors, surfers, mentors, and the community at large.”

Other sponsors of this year’s 100 Wave Challenge include North Island Credit Union, Degree 33 Surfboards, Swell Coffee Company, Reef, and Coca-Cola. For more information on the 100 Wave Challenge and Boys to Men Mentoring, please click here.
